Are Hydrocolloid Bandages a Cost-Effective Alternative to the Pimple Patch?

The category continues to grow rapidly as consumers find new uses beyond traditional wound care, per analysts.

Tween skincare brand JB Skrub added pimple patches to its product portfolio last year.

Hydrocolloid bandages aren’t the sexiest category, according to Spate, but they’re covering ground in popularity.

Rhode Beauty founder and Victoria’s Secret model Hailey Bieber even sported her own Spotwear pimple patches at Coachella with her husband and festival headliner Justin Bieber earlier this year.

On Google, top related brands naturally include Band-Aid.

Hydrocolloid bandages have grown 108.9% year over year, and across platforms, according to Spate.

Hydrocolloid bandages are moisture-retentive wound dressings made with gel-forming agents like carboxymethylcellulose, gelatin and pectin inside a waterproof outer layer. In addition to blocking out dirt and bacteria, they absorb fluid from a wound to create a soft, hydrating gel, promote fast healing without hard scabs.

Already a highly established trend, the category continues to grow rapidly as consumers find new uses beyond traditional wound care. Google currently owns 84.2% of the Popularity Share and has grown 101.4% year over year. The trend also receives 228.7K average monthly Google searches and 923.2K average weekly TikTok views. On Google, top related brands naturally include Band-Aid (5,000 average monthly searches) and Nexcare (1,500).

Repurposing Hydrocolloid Bandages as Pimple Patches

On TikTok, however, the conversation looks very different. Ad (3.8 million average weekly views) is the top related category, reflecting the trend’s very high paid views share (96.2%) and TikTok Shop share (95.5%). But consumers aren’t using hydrocolloid bandages for traditional purposes like over injured fingers. Instead, TikTok content is dominated by creators repurposing hydrocolloid bandages as an affordable alternative to pimple patches, especially for treating larger areas of acne-prone skin.

Related categories like pimple (1.9 million average weekly views) and bacteria (365,400) reflect interest in the bandages’ ability to absorb excess fluid, oil, pus and trapped impurities while covering multiple breakouts at once. Affordable (3,300 average weekly views) highlights growing demand for cost-effective acne solutions, with creators sharing how hydrocolloid rolls can replace multiple pimple patches for a fraction of the price. Others are experimenting with face mask (2,900) applications to create full-face treatments, while overnight (470,800) underscores the appeal of leave-on acne solutions that work while users sleep.
